What’s the issue with Hungarian government’s policies?
This initiative is motivated by the deep concerns many citizens across Europe share regarding an increase in the number of political and social measures at odds with European democratic principles and fundamental rights. We believe that the Hungarian government in particular has drifted too far from a true democratic commitment without being seriously held accountable by EU institutions.
Since 2010, freedom of the media and association has been significantly curbed in Hungary, freedom of religion or belief undermined, and individual human rights endangered, with the constitution enshrining discrimination against people with disabilities, women, LGBTI people and those who are homeless.
The brutal and unacceptable way the Hungarian government has treated migrants and refugees at its border with Serbia has further concerned democrats across Europe. Worse, it has also started to influence other Member States where the democratic culture is younger and potentially more fragile.
